At CES 2025, Microsoft made headlines by discussing its future plans for handheld gaming. Jason Ronald, Microsoft's VP of Next Generation, spoke during "The Future of Gaming Handhelds" roundtable. This announcement follows an interview with Phil Spencer earlier, where he mentioned that an Xbox handheld would still be a few years away.
Ronald highlighted Microsoft's long-standing innovation in the console space and emphasized the company's ambition to apply these advancements to both PC and handheld gaming. In an interview with The Verge, Ronald explained that the goal is to merge the best features of Xbox and Windows, which Microsoft has spent two decades perfecting. In 2022, a Microsoft developer even created an internal handheld user interface concept as part of a Hackathon, though it was never intended for release.
In the current handheld market, SteamOS is the dominant operating system, particularly on devices like the Steam Deck. Most other handhelds, however, are running Windows, which has limitations for this type of hardware, leading to usability issues. Valve’s Steam Deck runs a custom version of SteamOS based on Arch Linux, and the company is now working on expanding this OS outside its own ecosystem. Linux developers have also created a viable alternative called Bazzite for Windows handhelds while Valve continues refining SteamOS.
At CES, Lenovo unveiled its successor to the Legion Go and introduced two more budget-friendly handheld models powered by AMD’s new Z2 Go chip. One will run Windows, and the other will be equipped with SteamOS.
This move is part of Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to compete with other gaming platforms and enhance the Xbox experience across devices.
